Brief History of Film in Jamaica
The first feature film shot in Jamaica was in 1916. A DAUGHTER OF THE GODS was a silent fantasy drama which is credited as being the first US production to cost US$1 million to make. It is said the director Herbert Brenon employed 20,000 people over eight months of production during which elaborate sets were constructed.

Many overseas productions have used Jamaica as a location with the very first James Bond film DR. NO being filmed here in 1962 which was very fitting as the novels were written on island by Ian Fleming at his home in Oracabessa.

The very first Jamaican feature THE HARDER THEY COME was released ten years later in 1972. Produced and directed by Perry Henzell who co-wrote it with Trevor Rhone The Harder They Come took Jimmy Cliff and reggae music around the world and is considered a cult classic.

You will see from the movie posters collected here that a wide and varied collection of films have graced our shores and we have welcomed them all.
